It was after Marra decided to see Drail that she remembered the boy. He worked in the kitchen, where his mom served as cook.

His clothes were a little small, but not so small as to hinder her. He was the one who suggested the fireplace ash, which when brushed through her hair turned the dark red to a gray-brown. She gathered it into a ponytail, and donned the boyish boots and loose vest. It was difficult to judge with only a small mirror, but she thought no one would recognize her as female, let alone as Marra.

Thus dressed, she made her way to the Arc Banner Inn.

Mindful that Kratchett might be watching for her, she scanned the tavern twice before crossing the threshold. There was a man at a table, despite the early hour. He drank his ale with only a glance her way, so she kept her feet moving.

Up the back stairs and to the left, she went to their old rooms and knocked on Drail’s door. There was no answer.

After a moment, she turned the latch and peeped in to see a woman’s blue cape on the peg that should have held Drail’s leathers. Marra wondered if he’d found a lady friend.

But the few other items in the room were all feminine. Nothing of Drail remained.

She ran lightly down the stairs and stumbled upon the innkeeper in the hall.

“I have a message for Drail of the Hand of Victory,” she told him softly. That man in the tavern may well be just thirsty, but there was no need to let him overhear.

The innkeeper shook his head. “He’s moved on – to Hay Street.”

Something in the way he spat out those words worried her. His accompanying look seemed to share the disgust, as if she would know all about the place.

Her lips parted to ask as the patron stepped out of the doorway. “Any of last night’s stew still in the pot?”

She left.
